MEET HIEU
RAISED HERE. GROWING FORWARD.
Hieu Nguyen is running for City Council to make life more affordable, strengthen the services families rely on, invest in more parks and open space for children and families, expand housing opportunities, and fight for a Garden Grove that puts residents first and leaves no one behind. Born in Vietnam, Hieu immigrated to the United States in 1993 with his family of eleven. Raised in a working-class household that relied on Section 8 housing, SNAP, and Medi-Cal, Hieu understands how important it is for families to have access to strong public services and a community with neighbors who show up for each other. He attended Garden Grove public schools, worked in local restaurants and garment shops as a teenager, and became the first in his family to earn a master’s degree. Hieu is even raising his family in the same Garden Grove neighborhood where he grew up.
Hieu’s experience is community-based, and he has dedicated his career to improving the lives of those around him. As a licensed clinical social worker, small business owner, community organizer, and proven public health leader with more than 17 years of experience taking action to strengthen communities, Hieu has led large-scale county initiatives, built partnerships across government, nonprofit, and community organizations, and directed major investments to expand access to care and support for Orange County residents. Throughout his career, he has worked directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use issues, helping connect people to stability and opportunity. Hieu’s commitment to public service details his desire to run for Garden Grove City Council.

Facing soaring costs, Hieu sees improving affordability as a top priority. On City Council, he will work to spur new city revenue, bring in smart development, and create a more equitable local economy to lower costs and raise wages. Hieu will push for more accessible and enhanced public services to provide direct resident resources and help offset the high cost of living.
Hieu understands the need and urgency in addressing the housing crisis with direct action and compassionate solutions. Growing up in Section 8 Housing, he gained firsthand experience with supportive services and affordable housing that helped his family thrive.Together with husband, Hieu owns his own home and is raising his family on the very same street where he grew up. On the City Council, he will fight for longterm, sustainable, and affordable housing solutions to tackle the housing crisis, get people off the streets, and offer opportunities for Garden Grove families.
From creating more affordable housing to working with public transportation partners and local businesses, Hieu is ready to champion a new era of affordability for Garden Grove residents. He will fight for an equitable economy that makes it easier for our community to thrive.
-
Growing up in a working-class immigrant family, Hieu’s understanding of opportunity and strong community formed his career path to give back to his community, build networks of support, and improve the lives of people around him. Because he values a strong community, Hieu will work on City Council to increase community engagement through extensive city programming, hosting more public activities and events, and always showing up for the community.
Hieu practices engaged leadership that delivers for the community and he is ready to stand up for our families and to be the leader that strengthens and empowers our city.

Expanding and maintaining functional open spaces and public parks not only improves the beauty of our city, but strengthens our residents and families quality of life.
